We bring you the pART of Pontypridd Art Trail 2021 website to accompany our Covid-safe version of the annual Art Trail taking place across the town centre of Pontypridd and Ynysangharad Park. Every challenge is an opportunity, and with thanks to Pontypridd Town Council, Your Pontypridd Business Improvement District, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Website Sorted & Plaingraffic, we are delighted to be exhibiting a wealth of creative work this year, that you can visit in person or view online, by our latest graduates from the BA (Hons) Creative and Therapeutic Arts course at the University of South Wales, Treforest Campus.
The students and course teaching team wanted to use this opportunity to honour and celebrate the wonderful relationships cultivated with venues, businesses and organisations across our town who have inspired the artwork that has been created. As the Community Artists, Participatory Artists and Socially Engaged Arts Practitioners of the future, the students have produced artwork that has engaged or has been informed by the community of Pontypridd, or invites participation from the public once displayed. The exhibition not only showcases their work as artists, but also demonstrates their passion for supporting our community’s wellbeing during the pandemic, their ability to form meaningful connections at a distance, in addition to theirs and the community’s resilience.
Students have been asked to consider accessibility and inclusivity at the heart of their practice, so this exhibition website content can range from photographs, to videos with captions, soundscapes, flip books, guided meditation, recipes and more! We believe it is the most current and relevant way for our students to showcase their skills, providing them with important tools and experience for future practice, with perhaps an even wider potential reach than a traditional exhibition format.
I am sure you will all join us in wanting to wish them well as we launch them into their new careers in Art and Wellbeing.
Art trail Developments
On Thursday 24th we visited Pontypridd town and met with the local businesses and the town council and we were given the locations of where our art projects are going to be placed. I took some photographs of areas in and around the town and edited the ones I liked looking at the most. I also took photographs of all the locations where our places will be where we will be displaying our artworks. I particularly enjoyed creating a collage of images in a shape of a postcard and seeing how they all connect together.
This is a poster postcard to promote the workshops for the public to come along and make their very own postcards to take home or to use in the art trail exhibit in the museum as part of my project in the art trail. I wanted to create something that gave the poster character so I designed it so that each person who receives one can fold it into a card and then this can be displayed somewhere as a reminder of the workshop. The poster gives all the information about the workshop and venue times will be added once confirmed. This poster was inspired by all the wonderful areas that I visited in Pontypridd on Thursday the 24th.
The postcard rustic look was inspired by a book that I purchased at the Pontypridd library when I visited with the other art trail artists. The book was called Pontypridd in old picture postcards by keith Jones
This is an illustration drawing that I was inspired to draw during my visit to the Pontypridd museum as part of our visit as students for the Pontypridd art trail. I am not a very confident person when it comes to drawing because this is not something I'm naturally drawn to. Photography and mixed media are my natural go-to places when I'm in my art space. I decided to design my illustration created from a capture of the museum with a focus on a vintage look. The inside of the building carries a lot of beautiful tapestry work and heritage so this felt natural to me as an artist whose passion/artist identity is with our place and our heritage.
Out about on my travels in Pontypridd... One of my pet hates is that I get lost very easily when I'm in new places but in the midst of my lost travels exploring new places I seem to find the positive sides of getting lost and almost end up finding the most beautiful places and seeking just beautiful views of unexpected areas.
Pontypridd "places" rocks & river taff.
The images were taken by an android phone and I used photo editing to capture the elements of the image and enhance the colours to define a better quilty image. Photography and walking are one of my creative passions. I enjoy walking and the outdoors and nature (please click the link below to see more about nature and the outdoors and my workshops). The idea in the images captured was to take notice of the beautiful "Places" of Pontypridd and enjoy being in the moment and take notice of how you feel? when I took the first image of the river taff I was lost in the town and I found this place and it made me feel calm. The idea of getting lost brings about a minute's panic "where am i"?
This brought about the idea of finding other "places" in Pontypridd and I explored more and also asked people and visitors of Pontypridd what places they liked and take notice of.
A visitor from Porth said "I remember visiting Ynysangharad park when I was a kid and me and my sister used to picnic.
The hand-painted acrylic rocks were collected and painted by myself to share "Places of Pontypridd" that I noticed that the people of Pontypridd had a connection to.
