A CREATIVE ACCESS RESOURCE PROTOTYPE
I created artwork in response to my third-year art assessment brief with lecturer Becky Davis. We had to create an accessible resource for the museum of Wales Cardiff for a visually impaired group of participants. This 3D diorama was created inspired by the painting in the first image to the left, an oil painting by a British art school in the 19th century.
I wanted to make a resource that gave the viewer a tactile and touch sensory element whilst also incorporating sound and smell. I wanted to cover all aspects of the participant group and what was happening in this picture to connect with the painting. I did this by sketching a miniature version of the image considering areas that I would need to raise and how a visually impaired person would interact with it.
For example, when I sketched the girl, her dress was wrinkled and heavily fabricated. The goat’s fur was fluffed on the edges. I created these examples in the diagram of what was in the picture.
I created raised objects and surfaces for the viewer to experience as much as possible from the painting.
I used lavender oils to incorporate the smell of french lavender flowers that the girl was holding in her hand whilst also making tactile felted lavender flowers to touch to resemble a lavender flower.
Raised text on the back of the diorama so the viewer could read the name of the painting and created a QR code for the viewer to listen to an audio description that I made for the viewer to understand what was in the image and also how to interact with the physical art piece. Every element was considered here to understand the access resource fully.
