ACE ACTION IN CAERAU

This was my third-year placement on the creative and therapeutic arts degree course at Treforest USW. This project was based at a community centre in Cardiff called ACE - Action in Caerau & Ely. As a student, I was placed to run a project over 10 weeks creating 20 split sessions part A&B (designed A&B for a break between to air the room to minimise the airflow in the room) working in collaboration with the centre's stakeholders and its volunteers/members and our course and professional practice lecturer Sarah Challenger. I designed a project plan based upon a blended approach on the centre's aims and its participants, which were adopting the five ways to wellbeing.NHS(2019)Five steps to mental wellbeing:
  • connect
  • be active
  • take notice
  • keep learning
  • give
and providing new art sessions for the centre's volunteers/members as a welcome return from the closures of the none essential activities during the pandemics government guidance and its art group funding losses.  I facilitated sessions based upon a person-centred approach and adapted and adopted the sessions based upon the participant's needs and voices weekly. The sessions brought a fun learning and friendly atmosphere and participants enjoyed making art through sharing their stories about their volunteering and being active in their community whilst also sharing their heritage and its centre and learning new art skills based on our heritage. Participants enjoyed their time together and felt reconnected as a community family.
